My birthday this year was pretty chill. The kids had school and Richard had work so it was a pretty normal day! Adult birthdays are the worst. We did go walk around a new part of the municipal park by us and found a really pretty little pond to play by. Later that night, I even talked Richard into doing a YouTube couple's paint project with me that I thought turned out pretty good! A few days later, we watched another virtual magic show from Justin Willman, which was fun.
We started working on Kaylee's room to get rid of her awful brown walls. I think she was a little nervous by how terrible it looked with just the primer on! The next day, we got her blue paint on there and I thought it was really pretty! She seems to love her new room and it was nice to get our first big project done on the house.
One of my favorite things to do with our sidewalk chalk is to make rainbow bricks on the path leading up to our house. Another thing Brooklyn loves to do is make crazy animals, like ones that have the head of a frog with the body of a bunny. Her drawing skills have really blossomed in the last year!
I call Kaylee our little monkey because she can climb up anything! This used to be their bus stop and she climbed up it all the time. She had to climb up on a walk around the neighborhood for old time's sake!
We started tearing our kitchen apart, which was a little intimidating since we had no idea what we were doing! When we took off the first piece of counter, I pulled it forward and Richard's fingers got pinched between the super heavy counter and the cabinets and two of his fingers got scraped pretty bad. I guess we take it literally when we say we put our blood, sweat, and tears into our house!
Since Kaylee couldn't have a regular 5th grade graduation, they decided to do a parent drive thru parade. The kids all made posters and stood on the sidewalk around the school while the parents drove our decorated cars past and honked and cheered. It was a little awkward but fun for the kids to get some recognition. They also did a virtual ceremony the next day where they talked about the year and gave all of the kids certificates. I can't believe she is done with elementary school forever!
We really went to work on our kitchen on Memorial Day weekend. All day Saturday we took off the rest of the counter, used an oscillating saw to grind through the top and bottom grout of the backsplash, and cut out the drywall holding onto the backsplash. I guess I felt left out that Richard had put his blood into the project but I hadn't. I cut my hand and added some blood to our fun day! It was honestly so much fun and it gave us a lot of confidence that we could do it.
Sunday we took some badly needed time away from the torn up kitchen and went to the Park of Roses. We found a new fun part to explore and only went up to see the roses for a few minutes, we mostly played in the river. It was very much what we all needed!
Unfortunately, Monday was not so much fun. We started putting the new drywall up but we ran into many hiccups and it took WAY longer than we predicted. We also thought that we could find a way to rig the sink up to still use it until we got our new counter installed but we had to rip everything out to get to all the water damage in the sink cabinet. We had the girls wash the dishes with us in a container in the backyard and Brooklyn said it was the best part of the day. I guess they didn't have a very good holiday! Ha ha.
Brooklyn put up a sign that invited us all to attend her talent show and we ended the very frustrating, tiring day watching her do tricks on the trampoline. She is such a brave girl! I am very impressed by what she can do.
